According to a post being shared on Facebook, Walmart is giving away free $50 off coupons to celebrate Thanksgiving.
The post invites you to click to get your coupon. It features an image depicting one of the supposedly free coupons complete with Walmart logos.
However, the post has no connection to Walmart and people who participate will never get the promised $50 off coupons.
Instead, the post is yet another Facebook giveaway scam designed to trick you into submitting your personal details on dodgy websites.
If you click the post, you will be taken to a fraudulent website that is designed to look like it belongs to Walmart. Once on the bogus site, you will be told that you must share the page on facebook and add the comment “Thank you for my coupon” before you can claim your giveaway.
Sharing and commenting ensures that the fake giveaway post is seen by an increasing number of Facebook users, thereby providing more victims for the scammers.
After you have shared and commented and clicked the “claim” button as instructed, you will be taken to one of several decidedly dodgy websites that offer the chance to win further prizes in exchange for supplying your name and contact details.
But, alas, any details you provide will be given to unscrupulous and aggressive marketing companies who will then inundate you with unwanted phone calls, emails, text messages, and letters promoting a range of dubious products and services.
And, despite carrying out all of the steps supposedly required, you will never receive your Walmart coupon. The coupons supposedly being offered do not exist.
For the record, there is nothing about such a Thanksgiving coupon giveaway on Walmart’s officially verified Facebook Page.
Scams like this are very common on Facebook. New versions appear every day and they use the names of many different companies around the world. If one of these giveaway scam posts comes your way, don’t be tempted to participate. You will NOT get the promised prize. And, by participating, you are helping Internet scammers and exposing your friends to their fraudulent posts.
