Customers of UK bank Barclays should watch for a scam email that claims that they have new secure documents in their Cloud It. The fraudulent email urges recipients to click a login link to view these “important” documents.
To make it appear genuine, the fake email includes the Barclays logo as well as some seemingly legitimate data security information.
The phishing scam email is designed to trick you into giving your personal and financial information to criminals. Clicking the link opens a bogus website that asks for your login credentials, your credit card numbers, and other identifying personal information.
The information you supply can later be collected by criminals and used to steal your money and commit credit card fraud and identity theft.
Scams like this are very common and target customers of many different banks around the world. Be wary of any unsolicited email that claims to be from your bank and demands that you click a link or open an attached file to view documents, update details, or fix a supposed account problem.
It is safer to access your bank’s website by entering the address into your browser’s address bar rather than by clicking a link in a message.
Cloud It is a service offered by Barclays that allows bank customers to securely store documents online. Barclays has published information about scams and fraud on its website.
