According to a Facebook Page that is being heavily promoted across the network, young US rapper MattyB is giving away $100,000 and a new car to one lucky fan.
Posts on the Page claim that all you need do to enter is like the Page, and then share and like a promotional image depicting the supposed cash and car giveaway.
At the time of writing, the post had already been liked more than 27,000 times and shared 41,000 times. The Page itself had accumulated over 196,000 likes.
However, the Page is not associated with or endorsed by MattyB in any way. The Page is a scam designed to trick Facebook users into liking and sharing. There is no prize. The scammers responsible for the Page are exploiting the young singer’s popularity and large fan base as a means of gathering large numbers of likes.
A Facebook Page with a large number of likes can be a quite valuable commodity. Once a page has accumulated a good deal of likes, it can then be used to launch further scam or spam campaigns, this time to a much larger audience.
Alternatively, the Page can be sold to other scammers or unscrupulous Internet marketers who will repurpose it to further their own nefarious goals. The more likes a Page has the more money it is likely to sell for on the black market.
By tricking users into sharing and liking the post as well as the Page, the scammers ensure that their fake Page gets seen by an ever-widening audience.
The image in the post depicting the wad of cash has been taken from an earlier news report about investment strategies. And the car image also appears on several other blogs and websites unrelated to MattyB.
For the record, MattyB’s official Facebook Page – which features Facebook’s blue ‘verified’ tick – makes no mention of cash or car giveaways.
Scammers have also used the names of several other stars in similar like-farming scams. Be wary of any Facebook Page or post that promises cash or valuable prizes for nothing more than liking and sharing.
