‘Attempts to Export Opengraph File’ Facebook Phishing Scam

According to this supposed security warning, which purports to be from Facebook, you have made several attempts to export your opengraph file using an unauthorised application.

The message claims that these attempts were made from a location in China.

It warns that, if it was not you who made the attempts, your Facebook account may have been compromised. The email instructs you to click a link to update your security settings.

However, the email is not from Facebook and the claim about attempts to export an opengraph file is just a ruse designed to trick you into clicking the link. The message is a  phishing scam. The criminals responsible for the scam have used technical jargon that will likely be meaningless to many users in an attempt to make the message seem like a legitimate security warning.

If you do click the link, you will be taken to a fraudulent website designed to look like the real Facebook login page. However, if you ‘ log in’ on the fake page as requested, your login details will be collected by criminals and used to hijack your Facebook account.

Once they have gained access to your account, the criminals can use it to launch spam and scam campaigns in your name. Facebook friends who receive these messages may be more inclined to think they are genuine because they appear to have been sent by you.

For the record, Open Graph is a Facebook protocol that gives website developers some control over how information moves between a webpage and Facebook when the page is shared. For example, by using an Open Graph tag in the code of the webpage, a web developer can specify which page image will be shared when someone posts the page’s URL on Facebook.

If you receive this message, do not click any links that it contains. And keep in mind that criminals  regularly use similar ruses  to trick Facebook users into relinquishing control of their accounts.

Be wary of any ‘Facebook Security’ message that claims that you must click a link or open an attached file to rectify an account issue or avoid an impending account suspension.

It is much safer to log in to your Facebook account by entering the address into your browser’s address bar or via a legitimate Facebook app.
