According to this story, which has been circulating since February 2016, a woman in California is claiming that she is the biological daughter of Marilyn Monroe and former President of the United States, John Fitzgerald Kennedy (JFK).
Supposedly, the woman, Gladys Baker Morris, had always believed that she was the daughter of Monroe’s cousin Meredith Baker, until Baker, on her deathbed, told Gladys the truth about her parentage. The report suggests that the pregnancy and birth were kept secret in case the Kennedy brothers found out and had Marilyn and the baby killed.
But, while it is an intriguing tale, the story is purely a work of fiction. The story comes via the notorious fake-news website World News Daily Report (WNDR). Nothing published on WNDR should be taken seriously. And, for the record, there are no credible news reports that support the claims in the story in any way.
The picture at the top of the story that supposedly depicts Gladys Baker Morris actually shows Marilyn Monroe lookalike Susan Griffiths.
WNDR confesses to the fictional nature of its content via the following disclaimer:
WNDR assumes however all responsibility for the satirical nature of its articles and for the fictional nature of their content. All characters appearing in the articles in this website – even those based on real people – are entirely fictional and any resemblance between them and any persons, living, dead, or undead is purely a miracle.
However, this disclaimer is hidden under the website’s About Us link and is not included on the pages where the fake reports are actually published. And, to further the illusion of legitimacy, the reports are presented in news format. Many people are thus tricked into believing that the site’s content is genuine and are therefore likely to share it via social media.
There are now a large number of fake-news sites like WNDR that, between them, churn out a constant stream of nonsense disguised as news. So, should any strange or unusual ‘news’ story come your way, it is wise to verify it through a reputable source before you share it. Searching a news portal such as Google News will usually reveal if a circulating story is true.
