Detailed Analysis

According to posts originating from a Mac fans Facebook Page, you can win one of 100 MacBook laptops just by liking, sharing, and commenting on an image of the prize laptops and then clicking a link and liking the Page itself.

The posts claim that winners will be selected at random and announced via the Facebook Page. It asks participants to add a comment specifying what colour laptop they would like should they win.

The Page contains a series of very similar MacBook giveaway posts.

Some of the posts claim that the laptops are being given away because they are unsealed and therefore cannot be sold.

However, the Page is a typical  like-farming scam. No laptops are being given away and there will be no winners.

The Page and the fake giveaway posts it spawns are designed to accumulate large numbers of likes as rapidly as possible. By tricking people into liking, sharing, and commenting the scammers ensure that their bogus promotions will reach an ever-widening audience and gain a great many new Page likes during the process.

Once a Facebook Page has accumulated a large number of likes, the scammers can use it to launch  survey scams  or other types of fraudulent messages, this time to a considerably larger audience.

Alternatively, the Page may be sold on the black market to other scammers who will repurpose it and use it to further their own unscrupulous goals. Pages with high like numbers can command quite high resale prices.

Facebook scammers often use the absurd claim that large numbers of expensive items must be given away because they are unsealed. Do not trust any promotion that makes such a claim.

Like-farming scams  continue to be very common. Be wary of any post or Page that promises expensive prizes just for liking, sharing, and commenting.
