Various messages purporting to be from the UK’s Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) are claiming that you are eligible for a refund from a previous payment and should click a link to complete a refund application.
However, the messages are not from the DVLA and there is no refund. The messages, which can arrive via SMS or email, are phishing scams designed to steal your personal and financial information.
If you follow the link in one of the scam messages, you will be taken to a fraudulent website that has been designed to look like it belongs to the DVLA. A fake “refund claim” form asks you to supply your name and address details, your driver’s license details, your credit card numbers and other sensitive information. Some versions of the scam have even asked recipients to supply a scanned copy of their driver’s licence.
The information you supply will be collected by criminals and used to steal your identity and conduct fraudulent transactions in your name.
The DVLA is warning users about the scam messages via a post on its Facebook Page, which notes:
Scam warning: we don’t send texts or emails about vehicle tax refunds. Delete the message and don’t click the link.
If you receive one of these messages, do not click any links or open any attachments that it contains.
