The email includes the date that the supposed infringement \u00a0occurred as well as the  \u00a0amount due for the fine and other details.  \u00a0It explains that you can click a link to see &#8220;photo proof&#8221; of the infringement.<\/p>\n<p>However, the email is <a title=\"Scam involving traffic infringement email\" href=\"http:\/\/mypolice.qld.gov.au\/goldcoast\/2016\/11\/17\/scam-involving-traffic-infringement-email\/\">not a legitimate \u00a0traffic infringement notice<\/a> and the link does not open a photo of the supposed incident. In fact, the email is a criminal ruse designed to trick you into installing malware on your computer.<\/p>\n<p>If you click \u00a0the link, a JavaScript (.js) file will be automatically downloaded.  \u00a0If you open this .js file, a malicious \u00a0JavaScript will then download and install malware on your computer. The exact nature of this malware payload may vary.  \u00a0It may be ransomware that is designed to encrypt the files on your computer and then demand that you pay  \u00a0a fee to online criminals to receive \u00a0the decryption key. Or the malware may be designed to steal sensitive information such as banking passwords from the infected computer.<\/p>\n<p>Details, such as the amount of the supposed fine, the infringement date, and the name of the staff member who supposedly sent the notice may vary in different incarnations of the emails.
