The message claims that 10% of these funds will be given to ordinary Facebook users \u00a0&#8216;as a way of saying thank you for making Facebook such a powerful vehicle for connection and philanthropy&#8217;. Supposedly, all you need do \u00a0for \u00a0a chance of being randomly selected as one of a thousand people to receive $4.5 million is copy and paste the message and tag five to ten of your friends.<\/p>\n<p>But, alas folks, the message is just an absurd hoax. No amount of copying, pasting, and tagging will get you so much as a cent. Mr \u00a0Zuckerberg is donating \u00a0almost all of his Facebook stock to good causes, but he is certainly not giving away $45 million  \u00a0to random Facebook users who post this message or any other.<\/p>\n<p>In a December 2015 public letter to his newborn daughter, Mark \u00a0Zuckerberg  \u00a0announced that he and his wife would be giving 99% of their Facebook shares \u00a0to the \u00a0causes of &#8216;advancing human potential&#8217; and &#8216;promoting equality&#8217;. In the letter, he <a title=\"A letter to our daughter\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/notes\/mark-zuckerberg\/a-letter-to-our-daughter\/10153375081581634?pnref=story\">noted<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>As you begin the next generation of the Chan Zuckerberg family, we also begin the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative to join people across the world to advance human potential and promote equality for all children in the next generation. Our initial areas of focus will be personalized learning, curing disease, connecting people and building strong communities.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We will give 99% of our Facebook shares &#8212; currently about $45 billion &#8212; during our lives to advance this mission. We know this is a small contribution compared to all the resources and talents of those already working on these issues. But we want to do what we can, working alongside many others.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The prankster who created this ridiculous \u00a0hoax message has obviously used \u00a0wide-spread publicity about the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative \u00a0announcement to add totally undeserved \u00a0substance to his or her claims. And, of course, the hoax is reminiscent \u00a0of several other hoaxes that have falsely claimed that you could get money or prizes just by sending on a message. The most long-lived of these is a hoax that \u00a0claimed that Microsoft&#8217;s <a title=\"Microsoft Email Beta Test Hoax Continues\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hoax-slayer.com\/microsoft-beta-test-hoax.shtml\">Bill Gates would send you money<\/a> if you participated in a &#8216;beta test&#8217; by forwarding an email. <a title=\"Bill Gates $5000 Giveaway Hoax\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hoax-slayer.com\/bill-gates-5000-giveaway-hoax.shtml\">Versions<\/a> of this hoax have circulated since at least \u00a01997.<\/p>\n<p>If \u00a0this Mark Zuckerberg hoax comes your way, don&#8217;t be tempted to share it. All such messages \u00a0do is clutter our networks with even more pointless rubbish.
