The image features two photographs, one atop the other.<\/p>\n<p>The top photograph supposedly \u00a0shows the conjoined twins before the operation. The second photograph supposedly shows the same &#8211; now separated &#8211; twins years later as healthy and happy young adults.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Ben Carson and his medical team did indeed &#8211; very famously &#8211; separate conjoined twins \u00a0Benjamin and Patrick Binder in a groundbreaking operation back in 1987. The twins were brought from their home in Germany for the operation at \u00a0Johns Hopkins Hospital in \u00a0Baltimore. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\n     style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\n     data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-0355887770822260\"\n     data-ad-slot=\"9162856233\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p> However, the story did not have the happy ending that the image suggests. Moreover, \u00a0neither photograph actually depicts the Binder twins.<\/p>\n<p>The first photograph in the pair depicts the Canadian twins Krista and Tatiana Hogan. The family of the twins has <a title=\"Tatiana and Krista Hogan Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/permalink.php?story_fbid=1102218589798794&amp;id=128407360513260\">confirmed via their Facebook Page<\/a> that the top image shows \u00a0Tatiana and Krista in their early infancy.<\/p>\n<p>The second photograph shows identical twins \u00a0Cramer and Carson Gormley from Lake Fenton, \u00a0Michigan. The photograph, along with other pictures of the \u00a0Gormley twins, was <a title=\"For Lake Fenton's Gormley twins, sharing senior year experiences outweighs dollar signs\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.mlive.com\/flintjournal\/people\/2008\/02\/for_twins_sharing_senior_year.html\">featured in a February 2008 news report<\/a> about the financial challenges of raising twins. The boys were 18 years old at the time the photograph was taken.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, although Dr Carson&#8217;s surgery did successfully separate the Binder twins, the long-term health outcomes for \u00a0Benjamin and Patrick were far from ideal.  \u00a0After the 1987 operation, the boys moved back to Germany with their parents.<\/p>\n<p>While Dr Carson&#8217;s fame continued to grow, news of the Binder twins was scarce indeed and, in time, they all but disappeared from public attention. But, <a title=\"The story of the surgery that made Ben Carson famous \u00e2\u20ac\u201d and its complicated aftermath\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/lifestyle\/style\/the-story-of-the-surgery-that-made-ben-carson-famous--and-its-complicated-aftermath\/2015\/11\/13\/15b5f900-88c1-11e5-be39-0034bb576eee_story.html\">according to a 2015 \u00a0report<\/a> by The Washington Post, the boys were &#8216;hopelessly delayed&#8217; and, years after \u00a0the operation, &#8216;neither boy could get around on his own or feed himself&#8217;. Later, their mother \u00a0Theresia Binder found she was unable to cope with the boys on her \u00a0own and they went to live at a home for disabled children as wards of the state. Patrick Binder reportedly died some time ago. \u00a0Benjamin Binder is reportedly doing &#8216;relatively well&#8217; but still cannot speak.<\/p>\n<p>Thus the fate of the Binder twins was a far cry from that of the healthy young Gormley twins who are the real subjects \u00a0of the second image. For those that may still harbour doubts about the real subjects \u00a0of the second photograph, note the Lake Fenton name and logos on \u00a0Cramer and Carson&#8217;s shirts in this and <a title=\"For Lake Fenton's Gormley twins, sharing senior year experiences outweighs dollar signs\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.mlive.com\/flintjournal\/people\/2008\/02\/for_twins_sharing_senior_year.html\">other \u00a0photographs<\/a>. Of course, the \u00a0German twins \u00a0would be quite unlikely to be wearing such \u00a0shirts.<\/p>\n<p>Alas, the pictures depicting  \u00a0Krista and Tatianna Hogan and Cramer and Carson Gormley was included in a March 2016 Daily Mail article about the Binder Twins with the headline &#8216;Here Are 2 former Conjoined Patients of Dr Ben Carson \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Patrick Binder and Benjamin Binder&#8221; Years After Successful Surgery&#8217;. Of course, this is <a title=\"Rational Wiki - Daily Mail\" href=\"http:\/\/rationalwiki.org\/wiki\/Daily_Mail\">far from the \u00a0first time<\/a> that the Daily Mail has got facts wrong in its &#8216;news&#8217; reports.
