And the pictured insect is just a Giant Waterbug. The warning features an image of the insect along with a picture of a human hand that has supposedly been infected by the virus. \u00a0 \u00a0The depicted hand and fingers \u00a0are covered with what look like deep, diseased looking holes \u00a0in the skin supposedly caused by the virus. And, the back of the insect appears to harbour \u00a0structures similar to the hand holes.<\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\n     style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\n     data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-0355887770822260\"\n     data-ad-slot=\"9162856233\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p> The &#8216;SOS Alert&#8217; message asks that you forward the information to your family and friends so that they will be aware of the \u00a0dangers of touching the insects.<\/p>\n<p>A second version of the message that features different images of the insect and a human arm simply claims that killing the &#8220;new killer insect&#8221; with bare hands will infect you in just a few minutes.<\/p>\n<p>However, the claims in the supposed warning messages are utter nonsense. The holes on the depicted hand are not the \u00a0result of a virus caught via touching an insect but rather just clever \u00a0special effects created using makeup artist moulding putty and some other common substances. In some species of waterbugs, the females <a title=\"Giant Waterbug w\/eggs\" href=\"http:\/\/lifeandscience.org\/greg-dodge\/2012\/05\/11\/giant-waterbug-weggs\/\">lay their eggs on the backs of male<\/a> insects. The males then protect the eggs until they hatch. The shapes on the back of the insect in the pictures are thus just eggs.
