It features an image depicting an \u00a0Australian Army hat badge.  \u00a0Many patriots, aghast at Facebook&#8217;s \u00a0supposed \u00a0insult to Australian soldiers, are sharing the original post \u00a0or reposting the image with their own irate \u00a0message attached, apparently in the hope of thwarting Facebook&#8217;s alleged ban.<\/p>\n<p>But, in fact, the claims in the post are untrue.  \u00a0There is no Australian Defence Force badge ban on Facebook and the company is NOT removing images of such badges. The very fact that the image has spread so widely and for so long should be enough to indicate \u00a0that the claims \u00a0are untrue. If Facebook was really intent on banning the image, it certainly would not be so commonly shared and displayed on the \u00a0network.  \u00a0Moreover, similar \u00a0pictures showing Australian Defence Force badges, emblems, and logos have been published \u00a0via \u00a0countless other \u00a0Facebook Pages and Profiles for years with nary a hint \u00a0of removal. And, rather tellingly, the very same emblem is used as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/AustralianArmy\/\">profile picture on the official Australian Army Facebook Page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For the \u00a0record, the image used in the post is taken from a \u00a0sales list for a badge collection published on a \u00a0military antiques website. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\n     style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\n     data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-0355887770822260\"\n     data-ad-slot=\"9162856233\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p> Over the years, there \u00a0have been \u00a0many other \u00a0versions of the same &#8216;Facebook is banning a picture&#8217; protest messages, all of which have no factual basis. Another Australian-based message falsely \u00a0claims that Facebook is banning pictures of the Australian flag.  \u00a0Alternative versions \u00a0have made similar claims about the flags of various other nations. One long circulated hoax post claims that Facebook is \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hoax-slayer.net\/no-facebook-not-removing-veteran-amputee-images\/\">removing images depicting veteran amputees<\/a> because the images are considered offensive.  \u00a0Again, the claims are simply untrue.  \u00a0And, every year near Christmas, an old hoax message that claims that a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hoax-slayer.net\/no-facebook-is-not-trying-to-get-users-to-remove-a-nativity-scene-picture\/\">particular nativity scene<\/a> is being banned because it is \u00a0offensive once again goes viral on the network.<\/p>\n<p>So, where do these stories come from in the first place? \u00a0 Sadly, a great many &#8211; if not most &#8211; of them are created \u00a0by \u00a0callous individuals who are only interested in promoting their Facebook Pages or profiles. These people \u00a0know that raising the ire of patriotic or religious users by claiming that a country&#8217;s flag, defence emblem, or other iconic political or religious symbol is being banned on Facebook is a surefire method of collecting very large numbers \u00a0of likes and shares.  \u00a0Thus, many \u00a0of the posts are \u00a0nothing more than \u00a0like-farming scams.<\/p>\n<p>Possibly, in a small number of \u00a0instances, the protest posts are derived from a simple misunderstanding. For example, if a particular picture is included with a post that contains material that \u00a0really does violate Facebook&#8217;s community standards, then the company may remove the content. \u00a0 \u00a0Some users may erroneously conclude that the content was removed because of the image rather than the nature of the text that accompanied it and thus create their own protest message decrying the perceived image ban.<\/p>\n<p>So, if you receive one of these image ban messages, take the time to verify the claim before \u00a0you pass it on. If the &#8211; supposedly banned &#8211; image has already \u00a0been shared thousands of times over a lengthy period, then its a fair bet that the alleged ban is imaginary.
