According to the message, the first photographs show the arch still standing after the city was all but destroyed by the atomic bomb blast of 1945 while the second photograph shows the same arch, again still standing, after Nagasaki was devastated by 2011&#8217;s earthquake and tsunami.<\/p>\n<p>The photographs themselves are genuine but, in fact, they do not depict the same &#8220;arch&#8221; or even the same city.<\/p>\n<p>The type of structure referred to as an arch in the message is actually a \u00a0<a class=\"norm\" title=\"Wikipedia - Torii\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Torii\">torii<\/a> \u00a0a traditional Japanese gate most commonly found at the entrance of or sometimes inside a Shinto shrine.<\/p>\n<p>The first photograph does depict a torii at Nagasaki after an atomic bomb was dropped on the city on August 9, 1945. The \u00a0<a class=\"norm\" title=\"The Atomic Bombs and the Soviet Invasion: What Drove Japan's Decision to Surrender?\" href=\"http:\/\/www.japanfocus.org\/-Tsuyoshi-Hasegawa\/2501\">same photograph<\/a> \u00a0is included on numerous \u00a0<a class=\"norm\" title=\"A Photo-Essay on the Bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki\" href=\"http:\/\/www.english.illinois.edu\/maps\/poets\/g_l\/levine\/bombing.htm\">historical websites<\/a> \u00a0discussing the bombing. The photograph was taken by army staff photographer \u00a0<a class=\"norm\" title=\"Yosuke Yamahata\" href=\"http:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/cgi-bin\/fg.cgi?page=gr&amp;GRid=20103\">Yosuke Yamahata<\/a> \u00a0who began to \u00a0<a class=\"norm\" title=\"Yosuke Yamahata - Memeory Exhibition\" href=\"http:\/\/www.exploratorium.edu\/nagasaki\/photos.html#journey\/02.gif\">record the devastation<\/a> \u00a0of the city on August 10, 1945, a day after the bomb was dropped.<\/p>\n<p>However, the second photograph does not depict the torii at Nagasaki, but rather \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/travel\/article-1366411\/Japan-earthquake-FCO-severe-concerns-number-British-nationals.html\">another torii<\/a> \u00a0leading to Kozuchi shrine at the town of \u00a0<a class=\"norm\" title=\"Otsuchi, Iwate\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%C5%8Ctsuchi,_Iwate\">Otsuchi<\/a>, Iwate prefecture, Japan. Otsuchi was indeed devastated by the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan in March 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Nagasaki is located some 1300 kilometres away from Otsuchi.
