Supposedly, this &#8216;Green Moon&#8217; \u00a0phenomenon is an event that only occurs once every 420 years. The message asks that you &#8216;share this event&#8217;, and it appears that many people have done just that.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a transcript of the hoax message:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>On April 20th Several Planets are going to align which will cause the earth&#8217;s moon to appear green for about 90 minutes. This phenomenon is known as &#8220;green moon&#8221; and only happens once every 420 years. PLEASE SHARE THIS EVENT<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>But, not surprisingly, the message is just a hoax. The moon will not be turning green on April 20. Nor will it be turning green on May 29th as claimed in an alternative version of the message.<\/p>\n<p>Science and <a href=\"http:\/\/earthsky.org\/space\/green-moon-april-20-may-29-2016\">astronomy website \u00a0EarthSky<\/a> has dismissed the green moon claims as an urban legend. And, surprise surprise, \u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iflscience.com\/space\/do-you-really-need-us-to-tell-you-there-wont-be-a-green-moon-on-420\/\">IFLScience<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/32599-green-moon-april-lunar-hoax-debunked.html\">Space.com<\/a>, and other reputable sources also debunk the message.<\/p>\n<p>The hoax first surfaced back in 2016 and another version gained momentum in 2017. So, the hoax looks set to be an annual event.<\/p>\n<p>The <a title=\"Green moon on April 20, 2016? Not true\" href=\"http:\/\/earthsky.org\/space\/green-moon-april-20-may-29-2016\">EarthSky article<\/a> points out that the date (4\/20) and the &#8216;420 years&#8217; mention is a sly reference to &#8216;Weed Day&#8217;, which is celebrated by pot smokers on April 20 because a \u00a0long-running code word for marijuana is &#8216;420&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\n     style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\n     data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-0355887770822260\"\n     data-ad-slot=\"9162856233\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p> The &#8216;planetary alignment&#8217; reference \u00a0has \u00a0popped up in other hoaxes as well, including ongoing claims that an &#8216;extraordinary planetary alignment&#8217; will <a title=\"Hoax - Extraordinary Planetary Alignment To Decrease Gravity on November 4\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hoax-slayer.com\/planetary-alignment-decreased-gravity-day-hoax.shtml\">decrease gravity<\/a> for a time on a specified date.<\/p>\n<p>It hardly needs to be said that \u00a0the green shade of the moon in the meme is the result of some digital tomfoolery that used a standard moon image as its source.
