In one version, health authorities have supposedly discovered that about one million bananas \u00a0originating from Guatemala have been contaminated with the HIV-infected \u00a0blood.<\/p>\n<p>The original messages are in Spanish. However, there are also some English versions that have been poorly translated \u00a0from the original Spanish. Some of the \u00a0messages include an image supposedly depicting blood being injected into a banana.<\/p>\n<p>Another version claims that Satanists are injecting HIV-infected blood into \u00a0the &#8220;fruit&#8221; with the aim of killing millions of people around the world.<br \/>\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block; text-align: center;\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-0355887770822260\" data-ad-slot=\"9162856233\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><br \/>\nHowever, the messages are \u00a0just absurd hoaxes. There are no credible news or health authority reports that confirm \u00a0the claims in the messages in any way. If such a major contamination problem \u00a0were true, news outlets all around the world \u00a0would have covered it extensively. \u00a0And, of course, there would be official government health warnings for people \u00a0in potentially affected regions.<\/p>\n<p>A more recent version, which is presented as a &#8216;breaking news&#8217; report from CNN, claims that bananas in an Oklahoma Walmart store have tested positive for HIV. The message features a photograph of a banana with a red discolouration on one end. But, this version is also false. The false report comes from a fake-news website, which, despite the name and logo, is in no way associated with CNN.<\/p>\n<p>And, in any case, the claims have no scientific credibility whatsoever. HIV does not live for long outside of the body. Both exposure to air and stomach acids kill the virus. Therefore, even if bananas had been injected with blood from a person who is HIV positive, \u00a0there is virtually no chance that a person who later \u00a0ate one of the bananas \u00a0would become infected.<\/p>\n<p>In an article about HIV transmission, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) <a title=\"HIV Transmission\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/hiv\/basics\/transmission.html\">notes<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>You can&#8217;t get HIV from consuming food handled by an HIV-infected person. Even if the food contained small amounts of HIV-infected blood or semen, exposure to the air, heat from cooking, and stomach acid would destroy the virus.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Though it is very rare, HIV can be spread by eating food that has been pre-chewed by an HIV-infected person. The contamination occurs when infected blood from a caregiver&#8217;s mouth mixes with food while chewing. The only known cases are among infants.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The bogus warning is just an updated version of an earlier and equally nonsensical warning that falsely claimed that <a title=\"HOAX - 'HIV &amp; AIDS Infected Oranges Coming From Libya'\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hoax-slayer.com\/hiv-infected-blood-oranges.shtml\">oranges from Libya were being injected with HIV<\/a> infected blood. \u00a0In \u00a0fact, there have been a number of Internet \u00a0hoaxes that have claimed that various types of <a title=\"Bogus Warning - Canned Fruit From Thailand Contaminated With HIV\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hoax-slayer.com\/canned-fruit-thailand-hiv-hoax.shtml\">food<\/a> and <a title=\"Hoax: HIV Infected Blood In Pepsi\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hoax-slayer.com\/pepsi-hiv-hoax.shtml\">beverages<\/a> have been deliberately \u00a0contaminated with HIV.<\/p>\n<p>Sharing \u00a0such nonsense does nothing other than spread fear and alarm and add to the many myths and misconceptions about AIDS and HIV.  \u00a0If you receive one of these \u00a0bogus warning messages, do not share it with others.
