The emails claim that a complaint has been filed against your business and you have ten days to file a rebuttal should you choose to do so. They contain a link that you can supposedly click to view a copy of the complaint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>The link is disguised to make it appear to be \u00a0a harmless PDF. However, clicking the link downloads a .zip file that contains a malicious file inside. If opened, this file will \u00a0install ransomware on your computer. Once installed, the ransomware will encrypt the files on your computer and then demand that you pay a fee to online criminals to obtain a decryption key. However, even if you decide to pay, there is no guarantee that you will receive the key. And, even a skilled computer technician may not be able to retrieve \u00a0the locked files \u00a0without the decryption key.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>The ACCC has <a title=\"Beware of business scams impersonating the ACCC\" href=\"https:\/\/www.accc.gov.au\/media-release\/beware-of-business-scams-impersonating-the-accc\">published a notice<\/a> warning \u00a0about the emails on its website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Bogus &#8216;complaint&#8217; emails have been used to distribute malware for several years. Other versions have \u00a0falsely \u00a0claimed to be from America&#8217;s <a title=\"FTC 'Consumer Complaint Notification' Malware Email\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hoax-slayer.com\/ftc-consumer-complaint-malware.shtml\">Federal Trade Commission (FTC)<\/a> or from the <a title=\"Better Business Bureau 'Complaint Received' Malware Emails\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hoax-slayer.com\/bbb-malware-emails.shtml\">Better Business Bureau<\/a>. Again, the emails \u00a0ask you to click a link, ostensibly to view details of the \u00a0complaint.
