It is administered \u00a0by the \u00a0Department of Human Services.<\/p>\n<p>Often, the scam calls are automated messages that ask you to call back. \u00a0 In other cases, the scammers may call you directly.<\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\n     style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\n     data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-0355887770822260\"\n     data-ad-slot=\"9162856233\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p> Typically, the scammers will claim that Centrelink has been trying to contact you by mail about an increase in your payment but has received no response. Supposedly, because you did not respond, your files have been moved to head office in a far off city and your case is on hold. \u00a0 The scammers \u00a0then give you a choice of either travelling in person to the other city to complete the necessary forms or paying an immediate fee to have the forms mailed to you.<\/p>\n<p>They may warn that if you don&#8217;t deal with the issue immediately, you will not get the promised increase and your payment \u00a0may be stopped completely.<\/p>\n<p>If you agree to pay, the scammers will then instruct \u00a0you to wire the fee to them via a money transfer service such as Western Union. \u00a0 Or, they may <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hoax-slayer.net\/phone-scammers-asking-for-itunes-gift-cards-as-payment\/\">ask you to buy iTunes Gift Cards<\/a> and then call back to provide \u00a0the card numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Centrelink or the Department of Human Services will never cold-call you and demand that you pay an immediate fee in order to keep receiving \u00a0payments or get a pay increase. \u00a0If Centrelink determines that you owe them money, they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanservices.gov.au\/individuals\/enablers\/owing-money\">will make an arrangement with you<\/a> to repay the amount, either \u00a0by deducting a portion of your payments \u00a0or by paying off the debt using \u00a0a credit card, \u00a0 direct deposit, or BPay. \u00a0 They will certainly never ask you to pay any sort of fee or debt via gift cards or wire transfers.<\/p>\n<p>If you receive \u00a0a call from someone claiming to be from Centrelink who asks you to pay an immediate \u00a0fee, do not comply. \u00a0 Just hang up.<\/p>\n<p>If you are unsure about the veracity of such a call, contact \u00a0Centrelink or the Department of Human Services directly to ask about the call. \u00a0 Do not use a number supplied by the person who called.
