According to a post that is currently spreading on Facebook, Krispy Kreme is giving a free box of doughnuts to every single person who shares and comments within the next 24 hours.
The post features the Krispy Kreme logo along with images of the doughnut-filled boxes that participants will supposedly receive.
However, the post is fraudulent. It is not associated with Krispy Kreme and those who participate will never receive the promised box of doughnuts.
In fact, the post is just a scam designed to promote a bogus Facebook Page. By tricking people into sharing and commenting, the scammers can quickly build a much larger audience for their fake Facebook Page.
They can then use the Page to launch further scams, this time to a considerably larger pool of potential victims. Alternatively, they may sell the page on the black market to other scammers who will use it for their own nefarious purposes.
Krispy Kreme does regularly give away doughnuts as promotions. However, the company would certainly not give away a full box of doughnuts to every single person who liked and shared a Facebook post. If they did, the company would find itself obligated to give away hundreds of thousands of boxes of their products. Such a promotion would be cripplingly expensive, even for a large company like Krispy Kreme.
Giveaway scams are very common on Facebook, and scammers have targetted Krispy Kreme fans several times in the past via similar fake giveaway posts.
For the record, the official Krispy Kreme Facebook Page, which features Facebook’s blue “verified” icon beside its name, makes no mention of such a massive giveaway.
An example of the scam post:
Every Single Person Who Shares & Comments In Next 24 Hours Will Get One Free Box of DOZEN Krispy Kreme Doughnuts
