Floating Rock “Miracle”; – Surprising Rock in Saudi Arabia

Circulating message claims that an attached image shows a miraculous rock in a village in Saudi Arabia that floats above the ground once every year during the month of April.

Brief Analysis:
The image has been digitally altered to make it appear that the rock is floating. The large rock is actually supported by several other smaller rock “legs” that elevate it above the ground. These supports have been digitally removed using a program such as Adobe Photoshop so that the rock in the altered image appears to be floating.

Subject: Floating rock miracle…

See this miracle….. …….its unbelievable! !!

Surprising RockA huge rock in a village of Al-Hassa region, SAUDI ARABIA raises 11 cms from the ground level once in a year during the month of April and stays elevated for about 30 minutes !!!They say that 17 years ago, one terrorist [for criminal, he was terrorists, but actually Mujahid] was shot dead behind this rock as he was hidden there. This encounter happened in the month of April 1989. You can see the fresh blood stains on the rock. Most surprisingly, when the rock raises from the ground, these stains become darker, fresher and wet. Local residents tried to wipe off the stains several times, but after some time it appears again on the rock automatically. …. isn’t it astounding ?Have a look….Floating Rock

Detailed Analysis:
This image, which supposedly depicts a miraculous floating rock found in a village in Saudi Arabia, has been circulating via email, blogs, and social networks for several years. According to the message, the rock began floating back in April 1989 after a terrorist who was hiding behind the rock was shot dead. The message claims that every April since, the rock has again floated above the ground for around 30 minutes and that apparent blood stains on the rocks surface become “darker, fresher and wet” during the annual flotation.

However, this so-called “surprising rock” is not actually very surprising at all. The “astounding” floating rock is, in fact, the result of some fairly rudimentary digital manipulation rather than any sort of miracle or supernatural event.

In real life, the large rock featured in the altered picture is held up by several natural rock supports, the result of the natural process of erosion. The rock perches atop these supports, rather than sitting flush to the ground. Thus, to make it appear that the rock is floating, all the canny prankster needed to do was remove the stone supports from the photograph, a relatively simple procedure when using an image editing program such as Adobe Photoshop. According to an article about the fake picture on the alhabib website, the original rock can be found in the Al Ahsa (or Al Hasa) area in Saudi Arabia, a region noted for eroded and strangely shaped rock outcrops.

Other shots of the same rock taken from different angles, clearly show how the rock is really held up. Although, at first glance, the rock in the photograph below may look a little different than the “floating” rock above because it is taken from a different angle, a closer examination reveals that it is one and the same. The rougher textured cleft area is clearly the same in both images, as is the round stain or indentation at the base of the cleft along with the supposed “blood stain” on the rock surface.

Floating Rock Floating Rock
The same, well and truly grounded, rock can also be seen on Photo sharing website flickr. Exactly how noticeable the rock struts that support the larger rock are would seem to depend on the angle that the rock is viewed from and how much surrounding sand has accumulated around the rock base at any given time.

Moreover, even with the evidence of tom-foolery suggested by the above pictures, the total lack of any other photographs of the floating rock is another telling indicator that the image is a hoax. If this rock had really floated into the air every April for more than 20 years, then the event would certainly have been photographed and filmed many times over. If true, people from around the world would flock to the location to pay homage to the “miracle” each and every April. The event would have also been widely and repeatedly reported by media outlets around the world. Instead, the one and only picture of this supposed miracle is this single image.

Moreover, the supposed location and other details about the “miracle” have morphed significantly over time. One earlier version had the event occurring in Jerusalem and suggested that the rock floated continually, not just every April:

It is said that the rock is in Jerusalem. It was the rock where the Prophet Muhammad stood when he begin the ascend to heaven during the Israk Mikraj event. The rock was said wanted to follow the Prophet ascending to heaven, but the Prophet stop it. So it stopped the ascend and staying afloat until now.

Thus, alas, no miracle here, just some fairly simple “photoshopping”.
