Detailed Analysis
A series of messages currently being distributed on Facebook claim that Facebook users must register or verify their accounts or risk having their accounts deactivated. The supposedly official messages, some of which purport to be from Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, instruct users to click a link to access a verification code. They are told to copy all of the code and then paste it into their browser’s console. They are also asked to share the instructions with other users.
However, the messages are certainly not from Facebook or Mark Zuckerberg. The messages are scams designed to trick users into allowing criminals to control the behaviour of their Facebook accounts. Copying and pasting the code as instructed allows the scammers to use the compromised Facebook account for harvesting likes and for spamming. According to Jovi Umawing of Malwarebytes, the code can cause the accounts to autolike targeted accounts and posts, autofollow lists, tag other users, and stop account owners from unfollowing targeted accounts.
If one of these messages comes your way, do not follow any instructions it contains. Do not click any links in these scam messages. Facebook is never likely to require users to paste computer code into a console or address bar to perform an account function. Any message that claims that such a procedure is required is likely to be a scam.
Should you encounter one of these messages or their associated Facebook Pages, please report them to Facebook. And make sure that your Facebook friends are aware of this scammer tactic.
