On March 14 2019, the Facebook page Occupy Democrats<\/a> shared a meme<\/a> (archived here<\/a>), making a number of claims about U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York):<\/p>\n

In high school she won 2nd place at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. In a show of appreciation for her efforts, the MIT Lincoln Library named a small asteroid after her: 23238 Ocasio-Cortez. She attended Boston University, where she had a John F. Lopez Fellowship.<\/p>\n

During college, she interned in the immigration office for U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy. She graduated cum laude from Boston University’s College of Arts and Sciences in 2011, double majoring in international relations and economics.<\/p>\n

Although the meme made numerous biographical claims, it did not include any citations. However, an attached status update read “Public Service Announcement!”<\/p>\n

In order of appearance, the claims were: that Ocasio-Cortez won second place at an Intel STEM fair in high school, the MIT Lincoln Library named a small asteroid in her honor (23238 Ocasio-Cortez), she attended Boston University and had a John F. Lopez fellowship, she interned in Sen. Ted Kennedy’s immigration office in college, she graduated cum laude in 2011, and she majored in international relations and economics.<\/p>\n

It first claimed she won second place at the \u00a0Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF<\/a>) while she was in high school. That claim is true, per a November 2018 article<\/a>, “Intel ISEF alumna headed to Capitol Hill”:<\/p>\n

Congratulations to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (ISEF 2007) on winning her election to represent New York’s 14th Congressional District! In 2007, Alexandria placed second in the International Science and Engineering Fair in the Microbiology category with her project on the effect of antioxidants on roundworms.<\/p>\n

As a science student at Yorktown High School, Alexandria tested the effect of various antioxidants on the lifespan of roundworms, known as Caenorhabditis elegans.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Claim two is that \u00a023238 Ocasio-Cortez<\/a> is a small asteroid named after the congresswoman, which is also true, according to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and described in a tweet<\/a> she published in June 2018:<\/p>\n

Discovered 2000 Nov. 20 by the Lincoln Laboratory Near-Earth Asteroid Research Team in Socorro. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (b. 1989) was awarded second place in the 2007 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair for her microbiology project. She attends the Yorktown High School, Yorktown Heights, New York, U.S.A.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Claim three: Ocasio-Cortez attended Boston University and had a John F. Lopez fellowship. This is true. The National Hispanic Institute has a page<\/a> \u00a0(“JFL Fellow\/John F. Lopez Summer Internship”) and the organization’s magazine reported<\/a> in 2017:<\/p>\n

Ocasio-Cortez is accustomed to beating the odds and forging forward with determination. She was tutored well by her father throughout her early years, and kept close company with her mother, grandmother, and younger brother. At just 17, her father suddenly became ill and died, but bearing the burden of that heavy and personal loss, she enrolled at Boston University,<\/strong> completed her program in four years, and graduated fourth in her class.<\/p>\n

As a high school student, she participated in the NHI Lorenzo de Zavala Youth Legislative Session and became intensely involved in the organization’s work, going on to serve as an LDZ Secretary of State and a John F. Lopez Intern while in college<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The fourth claim is \u00a0that Ocasio-Cortez interned for Sen. Ted Kennedy’s immigration office while in college. Ocasio-Cortez referenced that internship on Twitter<\/a>, it appears in a Biography.com<\/a> page about her, and in a 2018 interview<\/a> with Jeremy Scahill, she explained:<\/p>\n

And 10 years ago I had worked in Ted Kennedy’s immigration office and he, to his credit, he had one of the best immigration constituent service offices in the country. And I would be handling some of these cases, and women and families would call me in a total panic because their husbands were scooped off the street in the middle of the day or they came home and there are literally stories of people coming home to their front doors open, and you know their stove flames are still on and their families are missing. The fifth and final claim was that Ocasio-Cortez “graduated cum laude from Boston University’s College of Arts and Sciences in 2011, double majoring in international relations and economics.” True, according to Iowa State University’s Archives of Women’s Political Communication (AWPC<\/a>):<\/p>\n

She graduated cum laude from Boston University in 2011 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in international relations and a minor in economics. During college, she was an intern in the immigration office of U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The meme’s concluding statement, that critics ought to get on the congresswoman’s level before criticizing her, is opinion. Nevertheless (unlike many political memes) the myriad claims it makes are true. Ocasio-Cortez did place second in Intel ISEF in 2007, and an asteroid was named after her. She was named a JFL fellow, interned for Sen. Kennedy’s immigration office, and graduated cum laude from Boston University with a major in international relations and a minor in economics.<\/p>\n
