Supposedly, Mars will appear as large as the Moon. \u00a0 <\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<!-- HS Net Top Content Responsive --><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\n     style=\"display:block\"\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-0355887770822260\"\n     data-ad-slot=\"4870821038\"\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p>The post features images depicting the &#8220;two moons&#8221;. The message claims that no one alive today has ever witnessed this event. \u00a0 It also claims that the event \u00a0won&#8217;t happen again until the year 2287.<\/p>\n<p>But, in fact, the message is just a silly hoax that has circulated in various \u00a0forms for many years.<\/p>\n<p>Mars will never look as large as the moon in the sky. \u00a0 If it did, then it would have cataclysmic \u00a0consequences for Earth, Mars and the Moon.<\/p>\n<p>NASA<a href=\"https:\/\/mars.nasa.gov\/all-about-mars\/night-sky\/close-approach\/\"> notes<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Don&#8217;t be fooled by the Mars Hoax. The message is that Mars will look as big as the Moon in our night sky. If that were true, we&#8217;d be in big trouble given the gravitational pulls on Earth, Mars, and our Moon!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In fact, this version of the hoax is just a mutated variant of the old &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hoax-slayer.net\/mars-earth-closest-approach-in-recorded-history-the-great-mars-hoax\/\">Closest Approach in Recorded History<\/a>&#8221; Mars hoax, which has circulated \u00a0continually \u00a0since around 2005. The closest approach hoax was originally derived from a real close approach that occurred back in August \u00a02003.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20040213005728\/http:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/headlines\/y2003\/18jun_approachingmars.htm\">According to NASA,<\/a> \u00a0on August 27, 2003, Earth and Mars were the closest they have been for around 60,000 years. Mars was indeed a spectacular sight in the night sky during several months of 2003. And it is true that Mars will not be that close to Earth again until the year 2287.<\/p>\n<p>That said, in 2018, Mars was again relatively close to the Earth, although not quite as close as it was in 2003. \u00a0 Mars appeared brightest in the sky in late July 2018. By mid-August, 2018 it was growing fainter.<\/p>\n<p>However, even at its brightest in July, Mars never looked even close to the size of the moon. That claim is simply nonsense. Mars looked like a bright, reddish tinged star in the night sky. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\n     style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\n     data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-0355887770822260\"\n     data-ad-slot=\"9162856233\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p> Unfortunately, messages about the genuine 2003 close approach have become more and more exaggerated and inaccurate as they circulated \u00a0around the Internet year after year. And various pranksters have &#8220;enhanced&#8221; these misleading \u00a0messages by adding photoshopped images that supposedly show Mars and the \u00a0Moon appearing as large as each other in the sky.<\/p>\n<p>If you missed seeing the recent Mars close approach, don&#8217;t worry! Another close approach will occur \u00a0in October 2020. But, rest assured, even then, Mars will not look as large as the moon.<\/p>\n<p>The hoax message claims that &#8220;no one alive today has ever witnessed this happening&#8221;. \u00a0 That is perfectly true.
