Supposedly, hot soapy water poured in through the sunroof, filling the car and drowning the hapless occupants. The report features a photograph of a carwash with a police car parked outside.<\/p>\n<p>But, I&#8217;m glad to report that no such tragedy has occurred. No Darwin, Mississippi family has suffered death by carwash as claimed. In fact, as far \u00a0as I can ascertain there IS no Darwin, \u00a0Mississippi. And, there \u00a0are no credible news articles that confirm the story in any way.  \u00a0The photograph used in the report is taken from a <a title=\"Yonkers Car Wash Robbed, Three In Custody\" href=\"http:\/\/yonkers.dailyvoice.com\/police-fire\/yonkers-car-wash-robbed-three-in-custody\/579494\/\">2013 news article<\/a> about a robbery at a carwash in Yonkers, New York.<\/p>\n<p>The bogus story comes via the notorious fake-news website Empire News. Empire news, which apparently considers itself as satirical, is responsible for a series of nonsensical &#8216;news&#8217; reports, including a viral story that \u00a0claimed that the body of a homeless man was \u00a0<a title=\"Fake News Claims Body of Homeless Man Identified as Elvis Presley\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hoax-slayer.com\/hoax-homeless-man-identified-elvis-presley.shtml\">identified as that of Elvis Presley<\/a> and <a title=\"FAKE-NEWS: 'Professor Hinkley From Gilligan's Island is Zodiac Killer'\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hoax-slayer.com\/fake-news-gilligans-island-zodiac-killer.shtml\">another that<\/a> tried to convince readers that \u00a0Professor Hinkley from Gilligan&#8217;s Island was actually the infamous Zodiac Killer.<\/p>\n<p>The site includes the <a title=\"Empire News - About \/ Disclaimer\" href=\"http:\/\/empirenews.net\/about-disclaimer\/\">following disclaimer<\/a> \u00a0on its About page:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>Empire News is intended for entertainment purposes only. Our website and social media content uses only fictional names, except in cases of public figure and celebrity parody or satirization. Any other use of real names is accidental and coincidental.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>For the record, the use \u00a0of the town name &#8216;Darwin&#8217; in the report is probably intended as \u00a0a sly reference to the <a title=\"Wikipedia - Darwin Awards\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Darwin_Awards\">Darwin Awards<\/a> in which an  \u00a0&#8211; often posthumous &#8211; honour is \u00a0 bestowed on &#8216;individuals who have supposedly contributed to human evolution by selecting themselves out of the gene pool via death or sterilization by their own actions&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>A great many fake-news websites have appeared online in recent years, and, between them, they manage to churn out a constant stream of driveling nonsense tricked up as news.
