{"id":1480,"date":"2019-04-06T19:33:39","date_gmt":"2019-04-06T19:33:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.syyhoaxanalyzer.com\/?p=1480"},"modified":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"-0001-11-29T17:00:00","slug":"Fake-ATO-\"Tax-Declaration\";-Emails-Want-You-to-Download-a-File","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.syyhoaxanalyzer.com\/?p=1480","title":{"rendered":"Fake ATO &#8220;Tax Declaration&#8221;; Emails Want You to Download a File"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Australian residents are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sunshinecoastdaily.com.au\/news\/scam-warning-dont-click-the-link\/3151692\/\">currently receiving emails<\/a> that claim to be from the Australian \u00a0Taxation Office (ATO).<\/p>\n<p>The emails \u00a0warn that a review of your 2016 tax return has revealed &#8220;several inconsistencies&#8221;.  \u00a0They advise you to click a link to download your screening outcome and then visit the nearest ATO bureau to clarify the supposed discrepancies.<\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<!-- HS Net Top Content Responsive --><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\n     style=\"display:block\"\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-0355887770822260\"\n     data-ad-slot=\"4870821038\"\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><br \/>\nThe emails have a subject with the words &#8220;Tax Declaration&#8221; followed by a string of numbers and finish with the signature line &#8220;ATO Australia&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>However, the emails are not from the ATO as claimed. The fraudulent messages \u00a0are designed to trick you into infecting your computer with malware.<\/p>\n<p>If you click \u00a0the link,  \u00a0you will be taken to a file sharing website and instructed to download a file.  \u00a0However, the file will not be a tax declaration document as claimed.  \u00a0Instead, the file you download will contain a malware payload.<\/p>\n<p>Similar \u00a0tactics are often <a href=\"http:\/\/hoax-slayer.net\/australian-tax-refund-scam-email\/\">used to trick \u00a0taxpayers<\/a> \u00a0into supplying their personal and financial information via fake account update or tax refund forms.<\/p>\n<p>THE ATO will not send you emails or text messages that demand \u00a0that you download a file or supply personal information via a web form.<\/p>\n<p>If you receive one of these messages, do not follow any instructions that it contains. Just delete it.
