Scam callers claiming to be from the Do Not Call Register continue to target people across Australia.
The scammers, who pose as Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) or Do Not Call Register staff, claim that you can now sign up for a device or service that will eliminate all telemarketing and nuisance calls. They then explain that there will be a charge for installing the device or service and ask you to provide your credit card details and other personal information.
In other cases, the scammers may claim that you must pay a fee to the Do Not Call Register to have your phone numbers listed. Again, the scammers will ask for your credit card numbers along with other personal details.
The callers have no connection to the ACMA, the Do Not Call Register or any other Australian government entity. Their intent is to get hold of your credit card numbers so that they can conduct fraudulent transactions in your name. If they are able to collect enough of your personal and financial information during the call, they may also be able to steal your identity.
If you receive one of these scam calls, do not give the caller any information. Instead, just hang up. You can report such scam attempts via the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) ScamWatch website.
The ACMA has warned consumers about the scam calls on its website, noting in part:
The ACMA reminds Australians that it does not make calls to the public offering services related to the Do Not Call Register. It does not offer any ‘device’ that can be installed to stop telemarketing calls and is not aware of any device that would be effective for this purpose.
You can list your phone numbers on the Do Not Call Register at no charge by visiting the register’s official website.
Note that, while this report discusses Australian based scams, criminals also target consumers in other nations via very similar Do Not Call Register or Telephone Preference Service scams.
