According to this email, which purports to be from the Australian Federal Police (AFP), you have received a subpoena. Supposedly, you have been ‘invited to a law court by the judge because of crime commitment’ and should click a button to download information on the case and then visit the nearest police station.
However, the email is not from the AFP and the claim that you have received a subpoena is untrue. Links in the email open a compromised website that harbours malware.
The AFP is warning people about the emails via a post on its Facebook Page.
We’ve been receiving quite a few calls from the public in relation to an email that’s doing the rounds.
This email purports to be from the AFP, serving a subpoena on the recipient. There are several links in the email which may be malicious.
Don’t click on them.
Just delete the email from your Inbox and Deleted folder.
The AFP does not issue subpoenas via email.
This campaign is similar to an earlier attack in which victims received fake AFP emails claiming to be traffic infringement notices. Clicking links in the emails downloaded ransomware.
