Outline:
Circulating Facebook post claims that Australian ladies can click to get 2 free samples from Kmart.
Analysis:
The post is fraudulent. It is not associated with Kmart Australia in any way. If you click the link, you will first be asked to complete an utterly pointless “survey” about your Kmart shopping habits before being taken to a web page that lists links to various available beauty product “offers”.
The links open dodgy websites that try to trick you into signing up for “risk-free trials” of their beauty products. However, fine print hidden in an “offer terms” document on the site will state that, if you do not return the products and cancel your subscription within 30 days, you will be charged an ongoing monthly fee of around $70. Many people may not realise that they need to cancel the subscription and the monthly fee will thus be taken from their credit card. And, stopping such payment subscriptions can often be quite difficult.
Again, the websites offering these “free trials” have no connection to Kmart. The company has confirmed that the offer is a scam via comments on the official Kmart Australia Facebook Page.
The scam discussed here is just one among several fraudulent “free sample” schemes that falsely claim to be associated with other well-known companies, including Chemist Warehouse and Costco.
