According to a rather grammatically challenged Facebook post that is being shared across the network, you can win one of 100 iPhones just by liking and sharing the post, and adding a comment stating which colour phone you would like should you be selected as a winner. The post, which features an image depicting a stack of iPhones on a table, claims that winners will be messaged ( or massaged ) by “Fabuary 9th”. The post comes from a Facebook Page with the name “OFW giveaways”.
But, in fact, the Post and the Facebook Page that generated it are fraudulent. The Page is not giving away iPhones as claimed and is in no way associated with Apple.
The fake giveaway is designed to promote the bogus Facebook Page far and wide by tricking people into liking, sharing, and commenting. When people like and share the post and add the “colour” comment, they are helping to spread the scam across Facebook. Their Facebook friends will see the post and many may also decide to participate, thus spreading the scam even further. And many of those who participate will also like the scam Facebook Page as well.
The fake Page will thus gain a great many new likes and can later be used to launch survey scams or other types of fraudulent activity, this time to a considerably larger potential audience. Or, in some cases, the Page may be sold on the black market to other scammers who will use it to launch their own scam or spam campaigns.
Scam Facebook giveaways like this one are very common. Be very cautious of any post or Page that claims that you can win valuable prizes just by liking, sharing, and commenting. Don’t be tempted to participate “just in case“, as this exposes your friends to the scam and helps the scammers achieve their goals.
