This email, which purports to be from Virgin Media, claims that your latest bill has failed because the payment processor has detected invalid billing information associated with your account.
It warns that your service is scheduled for automatic disconnection on a specified date a few days hence. It urges you to click a link and update your billing information to avoid the pending service interruption.
However, the email is certainly not from Virgin Media. It is a phishing scam designed to trick you into disclosing your personal and financial information via a fraudulent ‘account update’ form.
If you click the link, you will be taken to a fraudulent webpage that is designed to emulate the real Virgin website. The form on the fake site asks you to supply your credit card information, along with your name, address, phone numbers, and other ID information. After you click the ‘submit’ button on the fake form, you may receive a message advising that your profile has been successfully updated and that the pending disconnection has been cancelled. Your browser may then automatically redirect to the genuine Virgin Media website.
Details, such as the supposed disconnection date, may vary in different incarnations of the scam email. Virgin Media has information about these scams and how to report them on its website.
If you receive one of these scam emails, do not click any links or open any attachments that it contains.
