This email, which claims to be from “your future friend or enemy”, claims that the sender has recorded video of you while you visited a porn website. Supposedly, the sender also hacked your phone and saved a full backup of its contents.
The email warns that, if you do not give the sender $1000 in Bitcoin within 48 hours, a compromising split-screen video of you visiting the porn site will be sent to all of the contacts on your phone. According to the email, even telling the police “will not save you from the ridicule of friends, colleagues and family”.
But in fact, the email is just a bluff designed to panic you into paying money to an online criminal. The person who sent the email has not really created a compromising video of you nor has he or she hacked your phone and gathered all of your contacts. Such sextortion scam emails are increasingly common.
In this case, the scammer has rather lamely tried to make his or her warning sound more believable by claiming that the Facebook pixel is being used for email tracking. Facebook does allow advertisers to use a tracking pixel to learn how website visitors interact with ads. However, a Facebook pixel would not normally be used to track an email in the way suggested in the scam message.
The scam messages are generic and are not targeted to individuals. They do not address you by name. Nor do they provide any details about the porn site you supposedly visited or when the alleged incident took place. These sextortion scammers send out thousands of identical emails in the hope of tricking just a few people into paying up.
Details in the scam messages vary considerably. But, all of the messages claim that the sender has recorded the recipient visiting a porn site and will send the resulting video to the recipient’s friend if money is not sent.
Of course, if criminals had really harvested your contact list and recorded a compromising video as claimed, then they would almost certainly use at least some of this information to convince you that their threats were real.
If you receive one of these messages, just delete it. Do not reply to the scammers.
Versions with user passwords
Some versions of the scam emails increase the chance that the claims will be taken seriously by including a password associated with one of the recipient’s accounts. Because of the included password, even people who have not been to an adult website may believe that the scammer has accessed their computer or phone. The scammers are collecting these passwords and using an automated script to match the password with the associated email addresses from old data breaches. In many cases, the passwords in the emails are very old and no longer being used.
However, if the email includes a valid password that you currently use, you should change the password immediately. You can check if an account has been compromised in a data breach by entering the associated email address into Troy Hunt’s excellent “have i been pwned” service.
