‘You Have Been Mentioned on This Photo’ SMS Spam

According to this message, which is currently being distributed  via SMS, you have been “mentioned on a photo”.

The message includes a link that you can supposedly tap to see the photo and the alleged mention.

However, the message is fraudulent and following the link does not open a photo.

Instead, the link takes you to a dodgy website that claims that you can win prizes by filling in surveys and providing your name and contact details. The website that opens when you tap the link may vary in different incarnations of the spam message.   The link displayed in the messages may also vary.

Once you arrive on one of the bogus survey sites, you will typically be told that, for a chance to win,   you must register by filling in a form that asks for your name,   phone numbers, email address and home address.   This information will be shared with unscrupulous marketing companies who will later bombard you with unwanted  phone calls, emails, text messages, and junk mail.

In recent years, spammers and scammers have repeatedly used bogus text messages, social media messages, and emails that try to trick  recipients into clicking to see photos or videos.   Some, like the version discussed here, lead to survey scam websites. Others are phishing scams designed to steal account login details. Still others  may take victims to websites that harbour malware.

If you receive one of these messages, do not follow any links that it contains.   Just delete it.
