Butlins Like-Farming scam

Detailed Analysis:
According to a promotional post on a Facebook Page that calls itself ‘Butlins Holidays’, you can win a Butlins holiday for four people on a date of your choice just by sharing  the post. The post advises you to like the Facebook Page for updates and winning notifications.

Butlins is a holiday camp chain based in the UK. However, this Facebook Page is not associated with Butlins in any way and it is not giving away holidays as claimed. Instead, the Facebook Page is a scam designed to accumulate large numbers of Page likes as quickly as possible.

The genuine Butlins Facebook Page, which is called ‘Butlins’, not ‘Butlins Holidays’ and features Facebook’s blue ‘verified’ tick icon, is aware of the scam and has informed concerned users that it is currently working with Facebook to have the fake  Page removed.

By tricking people into sharing the bogus prize post, the scammers who created the fake Page ensure that it is widely promoted across Facebook.  The fraudulent Facebook Page will thus gain a great many new likes within just a few days of its launch. Once the Page has accumulated a large number of likes, it can then be used to launch survey scams or other types of scams, this time to a much  larger potential audience.

Or, the Page may be sold on a very active black market to other scammers who will repurpose it to fit their own nefarious goals. Generally speaking, the more likes a Page  has the more money it can be sold for.

Like-farming scams  like  this one are very  common. Be wary of any Facebook Page  or post that claims that you can win holidays, cruises, flight tickets, cars, tech gear, or store vouchers just by liking sharing and commenting. Remember that there are no prizes and, by participating, you are exposing all of your Facebook friends to the scam and helping scammers achieve their aims.  So, don’t  be  tempted to participate ‘just in case’ or ‘just for fun’.
