‘Upgrade Your Mailbox’ Phishing Scam Email

According to this email, which purports to be from your IT Support System, you need to update your mailbox due to a “new mail server upgrade”.

The email promises that the upgrade will improve security and offer a new mail experience.  But, claims the message, the upgrade will expire within 24 hours for security reasons. It instructs you to click a “Submit Ticket” link to perform  the required  upgrade.

However, no legitimate IT support system sent you the email. Instead, the email is a phishing scam designed to steal your email account login details.

If you click  the  Submit Ticket” link, you will be taken to a web page that asks you enter your email address, email account username, and email account password. After you hit the submit button on the fake form, an “upgrade successful”  notification will appear on the page.

But, now, online criminals can use the information you supplied to hijack your email  account. Once they have gained access, the scammers can use your account to send spam, scam, and malware emails in your name.

If the same login details  allow access to linked services such as online storage or app stores, the criminals may also be able to steal your personal documents and make purchases via your account.  They may be able to harvest a large amount of your personal and financial information and use it to steal your identity.

Email phishing scams like this one are very common.  Your email service provider is very unlikely to send you an unsolicited email demanding that you click a link to perform an upgrade or fix a supposed account problem.  Be wary of any such emails. If you receive one, do not click any links or open any attachments that it contains.
