Detailed Analysis
According to this message, which purports to be a ‘last warning’ from Facebook, you must update your credit card details. The initial message leads to a Facebook Note with further details.
The note demands that you click a link to update your credit card within 24 hours or ‘teams will close the page and your facebook account permanently’ and ‘your page will stop’.
Supposedly, the team ‘can not completion of your payment’, hence the urgent need to update.
However, of course, the message is just an amusingly inept attempt to steal credit card details from unsuspecting Facebook users. The message is certainly not from Facebook.
The link opens a fake update form that asks users to provide their credit card and contact details (see screenshot below). After users submit the requested details, another – rather threatening – fake message appears that claims that the team is ‘responding to recover the account’ but the account will be closed if users have provided false information.
In this case, the strange grammar and presentation of the scam very quickly gives the game away. Even less experienced computer users should hopefully see that skulduggery is afoot.
Perhaps this scammer is new at the job. If he wants to make a career out of such nefarious activities, he’ll need to lift his game.
But, while this attempt is quite transparent, there are plenty of others that are more sophisticated and may well fool less-savvy Facebook users into divulging their login details and other personal information.
Facebook users need to be wary of any messages that claim that their account will be suspended or deleted if they do not click a link and provide their details. This common scammer ruse finds new victims every day.
