According to this email, Sgt. Richard Wood, a war veteran with the United Nations troop in Afghanistan, needs your help to process funds derived from a crude oil deal in Iraq.
“Sgt. Wood” wants you to receive these funds on his behalf. In return, he will give you a percentage of the money.
But, both Sgt. Richard Wood and the crude oil funds are nothing more than figments of an advance fee scammer’s imagination.
The scam is designed to trick you into sending your money and personal information to criminals. Such scam attempts are very common and have been around for decades. If you receive one, just delete it.

An example of the scam email:
I am SGt Richard Wood, a war veteran with the United Nations troop in Afghanistan. I served in the 1st Armored Division in Kabul. Based on the United States legislative and executive decision for withdrawing troops from Iraq, I have been redeployed in Kabul on the platform of North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Our mission is to help secure terrorist targeted states, on the war against terrorism.
On the other hand, I want to inform you that I and my partner (Trooper James Anthony Leverett) have the some funds, which we got from a crude oil deal in Iraq before he was killed by an explosion while on a vehicle patrol. The fund is in the security vault in Turkey , the Manager of the security vault informed me last week that Turkey government have increased tax and the board have decided to shut down their operation in turkey so they are informing each of their client to submit an address so that they will deliver their consignments to them and shut down the company. Due to this incident, I want you to receive these funds on my behalf as far as I can be assured that my share will be safe in your care until I complete my service here (in Afghanistan) and come over to meet with you. Since we are working here on official capacity, I cannot keep these funds hence my contacting you to assist in receiving the money.
I assure and guarantee you that this is a risk free deal, if you are ready to receive the fund you will be paid a commission from the fund.
I want you to tell me how much you will take from this money for the assistance you will give to me. One passionate appeal I will make to you is not to discuss this matter with anybody. as any leakage of this information will be too bad for me as a soldier here in Afghanistan. I do not know how long we will remain here, and I have been shot, wounded and survived so many suicide bomb attacks, this and other reasons I will mention later to you. I honestly want this matter to be resolved immediately, please contact me as soon as possible on my e-mail address which is my only way of communication for now.
Yours sincerely,
SGt Richard Wood Kabul, Afghanistan
