Yet Another Qantas Like-Farming Scam Hitting Facebook

Qantas Like Farming Scam Page

According to a post currently being shared across Facebook, Australian airline Qantas is giving away  975 business class tickets to anywhere in the world along with $5000 spending money as a means of celebrating its 94th birthday. And, claims the message, all you need do for a chance to win is share the post and like the associated Facebook Page.

But this is just one more Facebook like-farming scam. The Page is fraudulent and has no connection to Qantas. And there are no prizes. The genuine Qantas Facebook Page – which is called ‘Qantas’ not ‘Qantas Air’ and features Facebook’s blue ‘verified’ icon, is warning users about the scam via Facebook comments like the following:

…our team are aware of this scam. We’re working with Facebook to have the fake pages removed. This is the only official Qantas Facebook page, identified by the blue verification tick.

Qantas has been targeted in a number of similar Facebook scams in recent years as have several other major airlines around the world.

The scammers set up these fake pages simply to accumulate as many likes as possible in the shortest possible time. Facebook Pages with large numbers of likes can later be repurposed to launch survey scams and other  types of fraudulent activity.  Alternatively, the Pages can be sold on the black market to other scammers.

Facebook like-farming scams like this one are very common.  Be wary of any Facebook Page or post that claims that you can win valuable prizes such as airline tickets, cruises, cars, tech gear, or store vouchers just for liking and sharing a page.
