Telstra ‘Payment Method Expired’ Phishing Scam

According to this email, which purports to be from  Australian telecommunications giant Telstra, your account payment method has expired.

The email urges you to click a log in button to update your payment method and continue using the service.

However, the email is not from Telstra. Instead, it is a phishing scam designed to steal your personal and financial information.

If you click the button, you will be taken to a fraudulent website that has been built to emulate the genuine Telstra website. Once on the site, you will be asked to log in with your Telstra account credentials and then provide your credit card details, address and contact details, and other identifying  information.

This information will be collected by criminals and used to commit credit card fraud and identity theft.

Telstra phishing scam emails like this one are quite common. Some versions have carried malware.  If you receive one of these fake emails, just delete it.

It is always safest to login to your online accounts by entering the address into your browser’s address bar or via a trusted app.
