Scam Email Pretends to be From General Lori Robinson

This email claims to be from none other than  General Lori Robinson, commander of the U.S. Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) and commander of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD).

Supposedly,  General Robinson came across a trunk containing $5.2 million during a raid in Iraq.   And, in order to keep the trunk safe and – presumably – get it out of Iraq, the General needs your help.   She wants to register the trunk in your name.

But, of course, the email is certainly not from  General Lori Robinson and you will not be taking delivery of any cash-laden trunks anytime soon.

This rather fanciful cover story is just another advance fee scam that is designed to trick you into sending your money and personal information to criminals.

If you reply as requested, you will soon be asked to send money in advance that is supposedly required to cover legal and shipping expenses associated with the delivery of the trunk.

If you do send money, further requests for money will likely continue until you run out of funds or finally  realise that you are being conned.   At the end of the scam, the perpetrators will disappear with your money and you are very unlikely to ever get any of it back.   Nor, of course, will you get your promised share of the trunk’s contents.   Neither the trunk or the cash supposedly inside it never existed to begin with.

Moreover, during the course of the scam, the criminals may have tricked you into supplying a large amount of your personal and financial  information.   They may later use this information to steal your identity.

Scams like this have been around for many years and long predate the Internet. You can read more about such scams here.

For the record,  General Lori Robinson is a real person and she did serve as commander of the  U.S. Northern Command  (USNORTHCOM) and commander of the  North American Aerospace Defense Command  (NORAD) from  May 2016 to May 2018.   General Robinson has now retired from the Air Force
