Phishing Scammers Continue To Target Citibank Customers

Like other major banks around the world, Citibank has been the target of phishing scammers for many years.

Criminals  continue to distribute scam emails and text messages designed to trick Citibank customers into divulging sensitive  personal and financial information.

The scam messages resemble official Citibank correspondence, complete with authentic looking logos and footer elements.

The messages use a variety of ruses to trick you into clicking links or opening attached files.

They may claim that suspicious  activity has been detected  on your account. Or they may claim that your account has missing information and needs to be updated. Or, they may claim that the bank is performing a systems upgrade and you are required to validate your account information.

To get you to act quickly, the scam messages usually  claim your account will be suspended or closed if you do not follow the instructions quickly.

Links included in the messages open fraudulent  websites that look like the real Citibank site. Once on the sites, you will be asked to log in and then provide your name and address details, your credit card and banking details, and other sensitive personal information.

Criminals can collect the information you supply and use it to hijack your Citibank account, conduct fraudulent  transactions with your credit card, and attempt to steal your identity.

In some cases, the criminals may include the bogus verification forms as attached files.

If you receive one of these scam messages, do not click  any links or open any attachments that it contains.

You can report Citibank phishing scam attempts  via the reporting address on the bank’s Security Center web page.
