Outline:
Circulating report claims that, from February 5, 2017, WhatsApp will include a new feature that can notify you if someone takes a screenshot of your conversation.
Analysis:
The claims are untrue. WhatsApp is not introducing any such feature.
The story comes from 8Shit, an – obviously satirical – humour website. Despite the rather telling site name and the tongue-in-cheek style of the report, a number of WhatsApp users have apparently taken the claims seriously.
But, in fact, the site clearly discloses the fictional nature of its material, explaining on its Legal Notices page:
8Shit is a satire news and humor website. All its content is fiction (except those under the “serious” category) and shouldn’t be taken as real. All references, names and marks or institutions in this web are used as contextual elements, like in any novel or science-fiction story.
Report continued below…
And, for the record, there is no mention of the supposed new feature on the WhatsApp website.
From February 5 on, WhatsApp will let you know when someone screenshots your chat
California.- Jan Koum, the CEO of WhatsApp announced that the next version of the application is going to include the option of being notified if someone screenshots your conversation. This is an option requested by a lot of users lately, and according to him “after all these years, we’ve reached the conclusion to add it”.
