Outline:
Circulating Facebook message claims that Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg is giving away $45 billion worth of Facebook stock and that 10% of this money will be given to ordinary Facebook users. It claims that, if you copy and repost the same message, you may be selected as the recipient of $4.5 million. Supposedly, come midnight, Facebook will search through the day’s posts and award 1000 people with $4.5 million each as a way of saying thanks.
Brief Analysis:
The message is just a ridiculous hoax. Reposting the message will give you precisely zero chance of getting any money from Mark. Reposting may, however, make you appear rather gullible and foolish in front of your Facebook friends. Zuckerberg did announce in late 2015 that he was donating almost all of his Facebook stock to good causes. However, he is certainly not giving away $45 million to random Facebook users who post this or any other message.
What the heck ………….I too thought it was a hoax at first but saw this on Good Morning America and the news so I’ll share the post for a cut….
THANK YOU, MARK ZUCKERBERG, for your forward-thinking generosity! And congrats on becoming a dad!
Mark Zuckerberg has announced that he is giving away $45 billion of Facebook stock. What you may not have heard is that he plans to give 10% of it away to people like YOU and ME! All you have to do is copy and paste this message into a post IMMEDIATELY. At midnight PST, Facebook will search through the day’s posts and award 1000 people with $4.5 million EACH as a way of saying thanks!
Worth a shot, why not! Better to be safe than sorry. Especially when this could really take some burdens off.
All you have to do is copy and paste this message into a post IMMEDIATELY and tag 5-10 of your friends. At midnight PST, Facebook will search through the day’s posts and award 1000 people with $4.5 million EACH as a way of saying thank you for making Facebook such a powerful vehicle for connection and philanthropy. I hope someone I know gets a piece of the pie–let me know if you do!!
Detailed Analysis:
According to this viral Facebook message, Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg is giving away $45 billion worth of Facebook stock. The message claims that 10% of these funds will be given to ordinary Facebook users ‘as a way of saying thank you for making Facebook such a powerful vehicle for connection and philanthropy’. Supposedly, all you need do for a chance of being randomly selected as one of a thousand people to receive $4.5 million is copy and paste the message and tag five to ten of your friends.
But, alas folks, the message is just an absurd hoax. No amount of copying, pasting, and tagging will get you so much as a cent. Mr Zuckerberg is donating almost all of his Facebook stock to good causes, but he is certainly not giving away $45 million to random Facebook users who post this message or any other.
In a December 2015 public letter to his newborn daughter, Mark Zuckerberg announced that he and his wife would be giving 99% of their Facebook shares to the causes of ‘advancing human potential’ and ‘promoting equality’. In the letter, he noted:
As you begin the next generation of the Chan Zuckerberg family, we also begin the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative to join people across the world to advance human potential and promote equality for all children in the next generation. Our initial areas of focus will be personalized learning, curing disease, connecting people and building strong communities.
We will give 99% of our Facebook shares — currently about $45 billion — during our lives to advance this mission. We know this is a small contribution compared to all the resources and talents of those already working on these issues. But we want to do what we can, working alongside many others.
The prankster who created this ridiculous hoax message has obviously used wide-spread publicity about the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative announcement to add totally undeserved substance to his or her claims. And, of course, the hoax is reminiscent of several other hoaxes that have falsely claimed that you could get money or prizes just by sending on a message. The most long-lived of these is a hoax that claimed that Microsoft’s Bill Gates would send you money if you participated in a ‘beta test’ by forwarding an email. Versions of this hoax have circulated since at least 1997.
If this Mark Zuckerberg hoax comes your way, don’t be tempted to share it. All such messages do is clutter our networks with even more pointless rubbish. Copying and pasting the message may also make you look rather gullible and foolish in front of your Facebook friends.
