According to a post currently being shared on Facebook, US-based airline Allegiant Air is giving everyone two free plane tickets to celebrate “April Aviation Week”.
The post urges you to click to claim your free tickets.
However, the post has no connection to Allegiant Air and those who participate will never receive any free plane tickets.
In fact, the post is a scam designed to trick you into first spamming your friends with the same fake giveaway and then providing your personal information on dodgy survey and competition websites
Here’s what the scam post looks like:
If you click in the hope of getting your free tickets, you will be taken to a website that asks you to fill in a brief survey about your flying habits. The site will then pretend to analyse your answers and declare you a winner.
Next, you will be asked to share and like the page via Facebook as shown in the following screenshot:
But, even after sharing and liking as instructed, you will still not get the promised tickets. Instead, you will be told that you must click links to visit various survey websites to complete your entry.
These websites will ask you to provide your name, phone numbers, home address, email address, and other personal details, ostensibly as a means of entering the draw for further prizes.
However, the information you provide will be shared with third-party marketing companies who will subsequently inundate you with unwanted and annoying phone calls, emails, text messages, and letters peddling a range of products and services you no doubt neither want nor need.
The scammers who created the fake giveaway will earn commissions each time someone provides their information on one of the survey websites.
Scams like this continue to be very common on Facebook. Be wary of any Facebook Page or post that offers expensive prizes such as airline tickets just for liking, sharing, and visiting survey websites.
