Netflix ‘Your Account is Suspended’ Phishing Scam

According to this email, which purports to be from Netflix, your Netflix account has been suspended because  the company is having trouble with your billing information.

The email claims that the company will try again, but suggests that you may need to update your payment details. It includes a handy “Update” button and promises further help  should you need it.

But, in fact, Netflix did not send the email and the claim that your account has been suspended is untrue. The email is a phishing scam designed to steal your personal and financial information.

If you click “Update”, you will be taken to a fraudulent website that contains a fake account verification form.   The form asks for your name and contact details, your credit card numbers, and other identifying personal information.   After you submit the bogus form, you may see a message claiming that you have successfully updated your details and lifted the account suspension.

But, online criminals can now collect the information you supplied and use it to commit fraudulent transactions  with your credit card and attempt to steal your identity.

Netflix customers have been repeatedly targeted  in such phishing scams in recent years.

Be wary of any email or SMS that claims that you must follow a link to rectify a supposed problem with your Netflix account.   Always login to your Netflix account via an official app or by entering the address into your browser’s address bar.
