Myer Australia ‘Go Crazy in One of Our Stores’ Like-Farming Scam

Outline:
Circulating Facebook post claims that you can win the chance to go crazy in a Myers store and take whatever you want for ten minutes just by liking, sharing, and commenting.

Brief Analysis:
The post is fraudulent and is not associated with Myer. There will be no winners. It is a scam designed to collect large numbers of likes as quickly as possible. A Facebook Page with high numbers of likes can later be sold to other scammers or used to perpetrate further scams.

Detailed Analysis:
According to a post currently being shared across Facebook, you can win a chance to ‘go crazy’ for ten minutes in a store belonging to Australian department store chain Myer. Supposedly, by liking and sharing the post and adding the comment ‘Myer’, you  may win your ten crazy minutes during which you can take anything you want from the store. The post, which features an image of a Myer storefront, claims that winners will be announced on June 15th, 2016.

However, both the post and the Facebook Page that it originated from are fraudulent. The supposed promotion is not valid and is in no way associated with Myer. This is yet another Facebook scam designed to gather large numbers of likes and trick people into spamming their friends via shares and comments.

After such a fraudulent  Facebook Page has gathered a large number of likes, it can then be used to launch survey scams, this time to a much larger pool of potential victims. Or, the now like-laden Page can be sold to other scammers who will use it to foster their own nefarious goals.

The genuine Myer Facebook Page, which is simply called ‘Myer’ rather than ‘Myer Australia’  features Facebook’s blue ‘verified’ icon to prove its authenticity. Much of the material featured on the bogus Page has been stolen from the genuine Myer Facebook Page. The image used in the scam post is stolen from other sources and depicts a  Myer store in  Joondalup, Western Australia.

Like-farming scams like this one are very common on Facebook.  Be wary of any post that claims that you can win valuable prizes just by liking, sharing, and commenting.
