Detailed Analysis:
According to a post that is rapidly gaining momentum on Facebook, ‘for the first time in Facebook history’, you can win one of two 2016 Toyota Fortuner vehicles just by liking and sharing the post, adding a comment specifying what colour car you would like should you win, and liking the Facebook Page that the post comes from. The Page has the name ‘Free Fortuner 2016 Giveaway’. Supposedly, the two winners will be randomly selected on June 20 and notified via inbox.
However, the post and the associated Facebook Page are fraudulent. Despite its name, the Page is certainly not giving away Fortuners and no amount of liking, sharing, or commenting will give you a chance to win one. In fact, this is just one more in a seemingly endless series of fraudulent Facebook Pages that promise participants the chance to win high-end cars. Many earlier variants have also used the ‘first time in Facebook history’ claim.
These fake Pages are designed to accumulate large numbers of page likes in a short period of time. By fooling people into liking, sharing, and commenting on the post, the scammers ensure that their material is seen by an increasing pool of potential victims. Their Page can therefore gather a great many new likes very quickly.
Once one of the bogus prize pages has gathered a large number of likes, it can then be used to launch survey scams or other types of fraudulent activity. Or, alternatively, it can be sold on the black market to other scammers who will repurpose it to fit with their own spam and scam campaigns.
Like-farming scams are very common on Facebook. Be very wary of any post or Facebook Page that claims that you can win valuable prizes such as cars, cruises, airline tickets, tech gear, or store vouchers just by liking, sharing, and commenting.
