According to messages that have circulated via social media for several years, actor Keanu Reeves gave millions of dollars earned from the iconic Matrix films to the special effects team who made the movies so compelling.
The claims are reportedly true. Sources do vary somewhat with regard to exactly how much money Keanu gave away. Some put the figure at around $80 million. Others claim it was $35 million or as much as $100 million. But all concur that the actor gave away a sizable portion of his earnings to crew members.
A May 2003 Hello Magazine article noted:
Man of the moment Keanu Reeves has shown his generosity by giving away £50 million of his earnings from the Matrix sequels. The 38-year-old decided to hand over the money to the unsung heroes of the sci-fi blockbusters – the costume and special effects teams. [……]
His gift to the Matrix series’ 29 behind-the-scenes whiz-kids will see each of them receiving £1.75 million.
ABC News, The Daily Mail, and other sources have confirmed the story.
Keanu is known for his generosity. The actor has reportedly donated millions to cancer research. Reports also indicate that, during filming in Australia, he gifted each member of the stunt team with an expensive Harley Davidson motorcycle.
But the actor still has plenty of money to get by. He told media outlets that:
Money is the last thing I think about. I could live on what I have already made for the next few centuries.
