A Few of The More Ridiculous Internet Hoaxes Currently Circulating

Some hoaxes might seem reasonably credible, at least at first glance. But, others are just plain silly and it’s hard to understand how they can possibly continue to circulate for so long. Here are five ridiculous hoaxes that have crossed the Hoax-Slayer desk in recent weeks.

  1. HOAX – ‘Cosmic Rays Entering Earth From Mars’
    Circulating message warns that potentially dangerous cosmic rays will be entering the Earth from Mars between 10:30 pm (or 12:30 am) and 3:30 am tonight and users should switch off their mobile devices. The message claims that the information comes from BBC News.
  2. HOAX – “Machupo Virus in Paracetamol”
    “Urgent” message circulating via social media claims that a new “very white and shiny” type of paracetamol tablets labelled P/500 contains the dangerous Machupo virus.
  3. ‘Bananas Injected With HIV’ Hoax Warning
    Circulating warning messages claim that people are injecting HIV-infected blood into bananas so you should not eat bananas that contain a red colour inside. One recent version, which is presented as a ‘breaking news’ report from CNN, claims that bananas in an Oklahoma Walmart store have tested positive for HIV.
  4. Absurd Warning – ‘LOL’ stands for ‘Lucifer Our Lord’
    Messages circulating via social media advise users to stop using the abbreviation “LOL” because it stands for “Lucifer Our Lord’ and including it in messages is actually endorsing Satan.
  5. Decorative Magnets on Refrigerators – Cancer Warning Hoax
    Warning message claims that researchers at Princeton University have discovered that electromagnetic radiation from decorative magnets stuck to refrigerator doors “radiated” the food inside thereby massively increasing the probability of cancer in test mice used in the study.
