Hoax Message Claims Cars Not Insured During UK Red Weather Alerts

According to a message currently circulating via social media, your car is not insured to drive during red weather alerts in the UK.

However, the claims in the message are untrue.

In fact, your car insurance remains valid even during  red weather warnings.

UK insurance company Direct Line notes via Twitter:

We’re aware of a fake news story being shared on Twitter. We would like to assure all of our customers that they are covered by their insurance policy during Red and Amber alerts. People should be careful when the weather is so extreme and only drive if really necessary.

And, Scottish news outlet Daily Record notes:

A spokesman for the AA told the Record: “It’s total nonsense to say you would not be covered during a red weather warning.

“If you were caught up in the red warning on the road, are you supposed to pull over and freeze?

But do keep in mind that, regardless of the weather conditions, if your insurance company can prove contributory negligence on your part, your claim may be questioned or denied.

So, for example, if you attempted to drive through a flooded crossing that had warning signs in place and your car was damaged or destroyed as a result, your insurance company may refuse to pay.   But, this would be true even if no red weather warning was in place.

Of course, during red weather warnings, people should avoid driving unless they have no other choice. And, if they must drive, they should take extra care and drive to the conditions.
