Outline:
Circulating report claims that an ex-army sniper has saved a neighbouring family by shooting violent home intruders from his bedroom window.
Brief Analysis:
The claims in the report are untrue. The incident described in the report never happened. The story comes from a fake-news website called The Seattle Tribune, which describes itself as a satire web publication and notes that all its reports are fictional. Nothing published on The Seattle Tribune website should be taken seriously.
Ex-Army Sniper Takes Out Neighbor’s Home Intruder From Bedroom Window
Jeremy Elmore, a 42-year-old retired Army Sniper currently residing in El Paso, Texas, is being hailed a hero after he saved a neighborhood family from 3 violent home intruders late Tuesday evening.Elmore, who retired from the Army at 41 after giving 21-years of service was spending the night home alone as his wife and 3 young children are visiting family members in Indiana.
Detailed Analysis:
According to a report that is currently circulating via social media, an ex-army sniper in Texas has saved his neighbours from violent home invaders with some well-placed shots from his bedroom window. Supposedly, retired army sniper Jeremy Elmore was cleaning one of his firearms late at night in his bedroom when “while adjusting the scope it unintentionally landed on one of his neighbor across the street’s open windows”. Through the scope, Elmore saw that the neighbour family was being attacked and held hostage by armed intruders. When the situation escalated, Elmore shot the intruders, thereby saving the family.
Or so the story goes. But, although the story is presented as a genuine news report, it is, in fact, a work of fiction. The event described never happened. There are no credible news stories about such an event.
The story comes from a fake-news website that calls itself “The Seattle Tribune”. The website owns up to its subterfuge via a disclaimer, which reads in part:
The Seattle Tribune is a news and entertainment satire web publication. The Seattle Tribune may or may not use real names, often in semi-real or mostly fictitious ways. All news articles contained within The Seattle Tribune are fictional and presumably satirical news – with the exception of our ‘list style’ articles that include relevant sources.
But, alas, the link to the disclaimer page is buried in the footer of the site’s pages and many website visitors are unlikely to even notice it.
The images used in the fake sniper story appear to be standard stock photos and have been published on many other websites.
It is wise to verify any strange or unusual “news” stories that come your way before you share them on your networks.
