This email, which claims to be from the “Profile Team” at Yahoo, warns that your account will soon be deleted due to an error detected in your mailbox. But, claims the message, you can avoid this account closure by clicking a debug error link.
The email tacks on some information about the benefits of upgrading your Yahoo account.
However, the email is not from Yahoo and your account will not be deleted if you don’t follow a link.
In fact, the email is a phishing scam and has no connection to Yahoo. Clicking the link takes you to a fraudulent website that features a fake Yahoo login window. If you enter your email address and password on the fake website, it can be collected by criminals and used to hijack your real Yahoo account. Once the criminals have gained access to your account, they can use it to send spam, scam, and malware messages in your name. They can also steal personal information from your account.
To make their claim seem a little more plausible, the scammers have copied text from a genuine Yahoo customer email about a system upgrade.
If you receive a fake email like this one, do not click any links or open any attachments it contains. Yahoo has information about reporting scams on its website.
